Early Life & Family

Mohanlal was born on May 21, 1960 in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala State (India) to Sri Viswanathan Nair and Smt. Santhakumari. He also had an elder brother named Pyare Lal. In his mother's own words, 'quiet, a very quiet child' is how we can characterize young Mohanlal.

He did his schooling from Mudavanmukal School and Model School (Thiruvananthapuram) and completed his BCom from M.G. College (Thiruvananthapuram). Incidentally, he knows famous director and his personal good friend Priyadarsan(with whom he has worked in the maximum no. of films -27) from childhood. Though not the best of friends at the time (Priyan recalls them fighting over the same girls), they had one common passion that brought them together-Cinema.

It is a little known fact that Mohanlal won a Best Actor Award when in the sixth standard in school, an award usually won only by the people from tenth standard.

He married Suchitra, daughter of veteran actor-producer K. Balaji, on 28 April 1988. He has two children - Pranav and Vismaya.

Career

While in college, he teamed up with his friends to establish a company called Bharath Cine Group and began shooting his first film titled Thiranottam, in which he played the role of a mentally retarded servant. The movie was directed by his friend Ashok Kumar. They were college mates in Mahatma Gandhi College, Thiruvananthapuram. Unfortunately, the film ran into trouble with the Censor Board and was never released.

His first major breakthrough came in the film Manjil Virinja Pookkal (1980), in which he played a villain. The film was a major hit, and Mohanlal followed it up with more roles as a villain, most notably in Uyarangalil.

In the meantime, he ventured into comedies as well, playing a role in his director-friend Priyadarshan's debut, Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, now a cult screwball classic. He soon established his credentials as an actor by proving his versatility by playing different role.

The film named 'Rajavite Makan' was a real break-through in his career. It was this movie that made him a superstar. This period also saw him joining hands with many noted artistes like Padmarajan, Sreenivasan, Sathyan Anthicaud, Priyadarsan giving many notable movies like "Naadodikkattu", "Thoovaanathumbikal", "T.P.Balagopalan M.A." that remain etched, even today, in the malayali ethos.

Awards and Achievements

He won the Kerala State Award for Best Actor four times, for his roles in T.P. Balagopalan M.A.(1986), for Ulladakkam(1991), Kilukkam (1988), & Abhimanyu, for Kala Pani (1996), & Sphadikam (1995), and for Vaanaprastham (1999).

He also won the National Award for Best Actor for his roles in Bharatham (1991) and Vaanaprastham (1999). Mohanlal also produced Vaanaprastham (1999), which won the National Award for Best Film. He also awarded the Jury's Special Award for Kireedam (1989).

Was awarded the Nation's Civilian Honor of 'Padma Shri' in 2001.

Malayalam film critics and enthusiasts regard his work in the 80s and 90s to be among the very best in Malayalam cinema. At its peak, his art was noted for its versatility, understated intensity, emotional depth, comic timing, and the ability to portray characters that embodied the Malayali ethos. He has portrayed the entire gamut of human emotions and the a wide range of characters. Mohanlal is often considered to be one of the most natural actors in India. Preferring the art of restraint, probably the most under appreciated quality in Indian cinema, he tries hard his to be just another character onscreen.

His best work spans a wide range. They include:

  • Comedies (Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam, Nadodikkattu, Pattana Pravesham, Kilukkam, Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, Vellanakalude Naadu, TP Balagopalan MA, Gandhinagar Second Street, Mukundetta Sumithra Vilikkunnu,Chitram and numerous others)
  • Dramas
    • (Thoovana Thumbikal, Chithram, Namukku Parkan Munthirithoppukal, Kanmadam and numerous others)
    • As an intense villain (Manjil Virinja Pookkal, Uyarangalil)
    • As an iconic antihero (Rajavinte Makan, Irupatham Noottandu, Devasuram, Spatikam)
    • In parallel cinema (Vaastuhara, Vaanaprastham, Guru, Aham,Thanmathra)
  • Tragedies (Sadayam, Kireedam, Chenkol, Ulsavappittennu, Dasharatham)
  • Musicals (His Highness Abdullah, Bharatam)
  • Artistic Genre (Rajasilpi, Kamaladalam)
  • Crime ( Company, Aryan, Abhimanyu)
  • Political (Lal Salam, Unaroo)
  • Thrillers (Thazhvaram, Manichitrathazhu, Season, Kariyilakkattu Pole, Mukham, Nirnayam,Yodha)

Mohanlal rose to stardom through the anti-hero role in the film Raajavinte Makan in the year 1986. That year saw the rise of a superstar and the revival of another(Mammootty in New Delhi). He acted in more than 30 movies that year, which include classics like Sanmanasullavarkku Samadhaanam, T.P.Balagopalan M.A.(for which he got the state award), Thalavattom(which was later remade into the Hindi movie Kyon Ki).

He would later go on to star in many quality movies like Naadodikkattu, Dasharatham, Kireedom (for which he got the jury award at the National level), Bharatam (National Award, Best actor), Manichitrathazhu, Devasuram, Sphadikam, Kaalapani, Vaanaprastham (National Award, Best actor, Producer), Thanmathra.

In the past few years, Mohanlal has been criticized for often playing larger-than-life characters (in a series of films starting with Aaram Thampuran). But later he came back with strings of hits like Thanmathra ,Rasathanthram, Vadakkumnathan etc where he played man next door characters.
