2003/a>, he traveled to Iraq to cover the medical aspects of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While in Iraq, Gupta performed emergency surgery on both U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians. One such case was a young marine named Jesus Vidana. Gupta was embedded with a Marine medical unit at the time. Vidana had a severe head injury and the Marines asked for Gupta's assistance because of his background in neurosurgery. Vidana survived and was sent back to the United States for rehabilitation.[1]
Gupta received both his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
He was also named one of the Sexiest Men of 2003 by People, along with his fellow CNN anchor Anderson Cooper. He is the medical counterpart of NBC's Robert Bazell.
