Rekha started acting very early, at the age of Thirteen . She did not even know Hindi at that time. But she was a quick learner and learnt hindi in three months and dancing in one month.Rekha made her first public appearance as a child artist in the Telugu film Rangula Ratnam (1966). Goadalli CID 999, a Kannada film was her first film in which she played the lead role of heroine. She worked in a number of Telugu, Kannada and Hindi films. Her first film Sawan Bhadon done with with Navin Nischol, was released in 1970. Throughout the Seventies, she remained an insignificant entity in Bollywood with nothing
but moderate success to her credit.
Rekha first attained real fame in 1978 with ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’.She joined hands with Amitabh Bachchan and kept giving successful movies like Do Anjaane, Suhaag, Mudaqar Ka Sikander, Mr. Natwarlal, Khoon Pasina and Silsila. But it would be totally wrong to omit some of Rekha's contribution in films like Khoobsurat, Umrao Jaan, Ghar and Khoon Bhari Maang.In the film "Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi", she had a negative character but so strong is her screen presence, that she went away with the Filmfare Best Supporting actress award.Rekha's peak years as an actress were indubitably 1980 and 1981; she had an unbroken string of artistic and/or box-office success.
