The name of Ahmedabad dates back to the mediaeval age, during the Mughal period when the city was having its formation, out of the royal patronage. At present, it happens to be the largest city in the state of Gujarat and also the seventh-largest urban agglomeration in the whole of India, with an estimated population, ranging about 51 lakhs or 5.1 million. It is situated on the banks of the River Sabarmati, a much known name for Mahatma Gandhi. Apart from that the city is the administrative centre of the district of Ahmedabad, while form 1960 to 1970, it had been the capital of the state of Gujarat, through it was later shifted to the newly named Gandhinagar. But that it not all! Other than the established and officially known name it is also known by another two names. While one is called the Karnavati, a name for an older town that existed almost in the same location, there is another name also. In the colloquial Gujarati, it is called as Amdavad.
Though the city has been continuing with the legacy of the mighty Mughal empire, it has been adorned by the rise of the political saint of India, Mahatma Gandhi in the hemisphere of both national and international politics. Still now, the remnants of the exploits of Mahatma Gandhi can be perceived, of which the Gandhi Ashram happens to be major tourist attraction in the recent days. Located near Vadaj the Sabarmati Aashram was once house of Mahatma Gandhi and was founded by him in 1915. The other tourist centers of the city are Akshardham, Kankaria Lake and several others. To reach the city you can use both the rail and road facilities. Also you can use the air route, the Ahmedabad airport is situated at 10 km north of the city.
